Illustration for literary works

What is best known and appreciated of Andriolli’s artistic output, however, is his illustrations of works of Polish and foreign literature. He started from single illustrations to poems, short stories, including serial literary pieces published in magazines, as was the practice in the nineteenth century.

The most ambitious undertaking was to illustrate the national classics and several important works of foreign literature. The greatest publicity was gained by the illustrations to the poem Pan Tadeusz, which were received with criticism, but contrary to this criticism, they are still used in the annual reissues of this national epic. Andriolli was honored by receiving commissions to illustrate such famous works as The Last of the Mohicans, The Pioneers, Romeo and Juliet, or Joan of Arc.

Below we present the discovered illustrations from individual works. Those interested are invited to visit also the Andriolli website prepared by Robert Lewandowski http://www.andriolli.pl/ and use the portals of digital libraries. Thanks to digitisation projects, you can access many illustrations by master Andriolli. The most materials are in the digital library Polona https://polona.pl and in Wielkopolska Digital Library: http://www.wbc.poznan.pl Some of the original Andriolli  templates are available at the Digital National Museum http://www.cyfrowe.mnw.art.pl/dmuseion.
